How We Started

A Local Business With Deep Roots

Kungkea Travel & Tours was founded by a team of local guides who grew up along the banks of the Mekong River in Stung Treng Province — one of Cambodia's most remote and beautiful regions. We started with a simple idea: that the best way to experience this place is with someone who truly knows it.

Stung Treng has always been overlooked by mainstream Cambodia tourism. Most visitors rush through on their way to Laos, never realising what they're passing. We built Kungkea to change that — to give travellers a reason to slow down, step off the main road, and discover a side of Cambodia that few ever see.

Today we offer small-group and private tours covering the Mekong's extraordinary flooded forests, remote river islands, thundering waterfalls, and authentic local village life — all guided by people who have lived here their whole lives.

This is one of the last places in Southeast Asia where you can experience the Mekong River in something close to its natural state. The flooded forests north of town — submerged trees, glassy water, complete stillness — are unlike anything else in the region. Rare Irrawaddy dolphins still swim these waters. Kingfishers dart between the branches. On a morning boat, you can go an hour without seeing another person.
